The Original Author and the Adapted Play

Born in China and graduating from the Master's program in Design at Goldsmiths, University of London, Yuqiu Wang (Rachel) focuses on the emotional expression of soft materials, particularly delving into knitted garment design and dance therapy.

Rachel extensively explores the unique potential of knitwear in emotional expression and trauma response, utilizing it as a medium to convey personal and collective narratives, harnessing the characteristics of the material to narrate women's stories. She emphasizes the ability to combine bodily movement with textiles, investigating the profound healing effects of knitting integrated with dance therapy, providing a platform for the physical and mental well-being of women.

The dance theatre piece "Weaving Me, Weaving Mum," set to premiere at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, was originally conceived as the director's graduate project at Goldsmiths, University of London. It featured knitted costumes, installations, an autobiographical book, and an original dance short film. Now, the director has adapted and expanded the content from the existing dance short film and autobiography into a new 55-minute dance theatre piece.

Passionate about multidimensional, multimedia dance creations, the director incorporates knitting into dance, exploring themes of female identity and portraying women's coming-of-age experiences. The original script, titled "Mom, I Don't Want to Dream of You Anymore," reflects the director's desire to dispel psychological shadows left by her mother, delving into conflicts that imprinted psychological scars during adolescence.

The dance short film, derived from the director's personal experiences of understanding mother-daughter relationships and healing from trauma, incorporates the director's own knitted creations. In this performance, she wears these creations, narrating her journey of self-discovery through dance. Realizing her true longing for this connection from her mother, she decides to rebuild it.
